During the Civil War, women did not have many rights of their own. For example, when women married, they lost all of their civil and legal rights. William Blackstone, an expert on English legal, said, ”When a couple marries, they become one and the one is he.” Also, when women married, they became just as good as slaves. The man they were married to owned them! No matter what, they could not leave their husband because they legally belonged to him, and divorce laws were not passed until the late 19th century. This is just one example of rights that women did not have and men did during the Civil War era. This, though, did not stop women from helping decide what others’ rights should be.
Sarah Edmonds, Harriet Tubman, Mary Lincoln, and Clara Barton were all influential women in the Civil War era, and each of them has a very interesting story of their life.
